Programming Fundamentals

Programming Fundamentals

A gentle start for absolute beginners. You will learn what a program is, how Java code is compiled and run, and the building blocks every programming language shares: variables, data types, operators, conditions, loops and methods. Each lesson ends with a small exercise you can try on your own computer.

Lessons in this path

  1. What is programming? How programs execute

Understand what a program is, how Java source code is compiled to bytecode, and how the JVM runs it line by line.

    12 min Knowledge check Exercise

  2. Variables, primitive data types and operators

Store values in variables, choose the right primitive type and calculate with arithmetic, assignment and comparison operators.

  3. Conditional statements and logical operators

Make decisions with if, else if, else and switch, and combine conditions with &&, || and !.

  4. Loops and iteration

Repeat work with for, while and do-while loops, loop over arrays, and avoid off-by-one and infinite loops.

    15 min Knowledge check Exercise

  5. Functions, problem-solving and a coding exercise

Organise code into methods with parameters and return values, and use a step-by-step approach to solve a coding problem.
