Database Fundamentals

Database Fundamentals

Almost every application stores its data in a database. This path explains how relational databases organise data in tables, how keys connect tables, and how to ask questions of your data with SQL. The examples use standard SQL that runs on PostgreSQL, and most of it works unchanged on MySQL and SQLite.

Lessons in this path

  1. Tables, rows, columns and data types

Learn how a relational database organises data into tables and how to choose column data types.

    12 min Knowledge check Exercise

  2. Primary keys, foreign keys and relationships

Identify every row with a primary key and connect tables with foreign keys to model one-to-many and many-to-many relationships.

    15 min Knowledge check Exercise

  3. SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY and LIMIT

Retrieve exactly the columns and rows you need, sort them and limit the number of results.

    15 min Knowledge check Exercise

  4. Basic filtering and a mini SQL exercise

Combine conditions with AND, OR and NOT, use IN, BETWEEN, LIKE and IS NULL, and solve a set of SQL challenges.
